World Oyster Eating Championship
This year on the Festival Gig Rig in The Square, we have two incredible competitions!
Before the start of the actual World Oyster Eating Championships on Saturday 7th September, we have a fantastic “warm-up” event! In this competition, entrants from all over the world compete to see who can consume 30 native oysters in the fastest time. The current record of 22.01 seconds is held by Soon-Ok Potter from South Korea! This Northern Ireland heat will take place on Thursday 5th September in The Hillside, Hillsborough.
As soon as that competition has been decided, we have the main World Oyster Eating Championship. The current World Champion is Colin Shirlow from Dromore, Co. Down. Last year he consumed 233 oysters in three minutes.
Colin also is the reigning Guinness World Record-holder. His record is unbeaten since 2003!
This year Colin will face two NEW contestants, especially flown in from America to attempt to knock Colin of his Perch. If you thought last year was exciting with the Black Widow trying to take his title then you don’t want to miss this!
